Spain’s classical guitar legend passes away

890_rodriguez20webManuel Rodriguez 1926-2008

Manuel Rodriguez Sr., internationally renowned for his classical guitars, passed away on Christmas day, aged 82.

Rodriguez, the grandson of flamenco guitarist Manuel Rodriguez Marequi and son of classical luthier Manuel Rodriguez Perez, learned the art of constructing a guitar firsthand.

His apprenticeship began at the age of 13 in Madrid and after operating in his own shop in Spain, he emigrated to Los Angeles in 1959 opening a business there.
Rodriguez resided in Los Angeles for nearly 15 years, making guitars for professionals, Hollywood actors, teachers, and students before moving back to Madrid in 1973.

Manuel Rodriguez passed the art of guitar-making to his two sons, Manuel Jr. and Norman, who continue the business.

A lengthier obituary will appear in the February issue of MI Pro.

Rico’s Reed Vitalizer Offers Improved Features

humidity
FARMINGDALE, NY, January 19, 2006 – The Rico Reed Vitalizer has made a name for itself as one of the top reed storage devices in history, and now Rico has made the Reed Vitalizer even better with some design modifications that further enhance its most attractive features.

In addition to new artwork for the Reed Vitalizers packaging, the Reed Vitalizer control bag has been resized, and the smaller dimensions allow it to more easily fit inside instrument cases. The humidity control packs are now packaged in a special foil wrapper that lengthens their shelf life and ensures that theyre always ready to go.

The Reed Vitalizer uses a patented Humidipak two-way humidity control system to self adjust in any climate, keeping the reeds inside at the perfect humidity, which ensures that they play consistently from day to day. Reed Vitalizer control packs are available in three humidity levels (58%, 73%, and 84%) for either storage or daily use, and prevent warpage, keeping reed tips flat. Each control pack lasts between 45 and 60 days, and are simply replaced when they become hard. Each control bag comes with one control pack, and replacement control packs are available in single refills. A display rack for Reed Vitalizer products is also available; it holds both control bags and refill packs and is perfect for wall or countertop display.

“Woodwind musicians know that the same reed can perform differently from day to day,” remarks Rico Brand Manager Robert Polan. “Storing reeds in the Reed Vitalizer ends that. A reed stored in the Reed Vitalizer will play consistently from day to day. It’s an immense improvement for players and our new design modifications make the Reed Vitalizer even more handy to have around. It’s quickly becoming an indispensable part of woodwind players’ gear.
Two-way Humidity Control for reeds

Reed Vitalizer offers maintenance-free reed storage. The patented Humidipak technology uses two-way humidity control to keep your reed tips flat and prevent cracking and warping. Reed Vitalizer control packs will last 45-60 days. When the pack becomes hard, discard and replace with a new pack.
Stores reeds at ideal humidity levels
Self-regulates humidity with no maintenance
84%, 73%, & 58% humidity levels available
Reed tips stay flat
Reeds are ready to play
“I have found the Reed Vitalizer system to be one of the best solutions to reed problems to appear in many years. Its simplicity and modest cost make it worth a try to solve your reed problems, as well.”

Yamaha GB1 ‘Baby-Grand’ Named Best Acoustic Piano at Music Industry Awards

gb1

Yamaha’s popular GB1 Grand Piano just keeps on producing all the right notes! It was voted the UK’s ‘best acoustic piano’ by MIA (Music Industries Association) members at their recent prestigious annual awards ceremony.

This accolade is one of the most highly prized honours in the musical instrument industry and coincides with Yamaha’s announcement of an updated version of the GB1 featuring a ’soft-fall’ lid and a price reduction from £8199 to £7599. The GB1 instrument now looks set to become one of the UK’s most popular and best selling models, the ‘best acoustic piano’ title no doubt significantly boosting it’s chances.

Given its highly compact dimensions and a surprisingly affordable price tag of £7599, the GB1 offers uncompromising levels of musical performance and further demonstrates Yamaha’s unique ability to create instruments that retain exceptional sound quality thanks to a no-compromise approach to materials and levels of craftsmanship. A true Yamaha Grand Piano in all respects, created for discerning and demanding customers on smaller budgets in smaller spaces.

The Music Industries Association is the principal trade association in the UK, representing over 350 musical instrument manufacturers, retailers, publishers and allied distributors. All awards are the result of a confidential voting process from the membership and thus reflect accurate opinion amongst the industry.

Yamaha Music’s Senior Director, Mike Ketley commented, “We are delighted with this award! The nature of the voting process by industry members, including our competitors, clearly positions the GB1 as the best compact grand piano you can buy, it’s as simple as that. Yamaha have been able to build a superb instrument at a highly desirable price without compromising on sound quality, materials and our much-envied levels of craftsmanship.”

Formula one racing car designer takes fast lane to Festival Hall with Yamaha and the London Philharmonic Orchestra

yamaha-f11

Following professional recognition as the most outstanding amateur classical piano talent in the UK, Formula One racing car designer Dominic Piers Smith has now realised his dreams to perform with a world-class orchestra at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall at Southbank centre.

Presented by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Raymond Gubbay in association with Yamaha, Dominic will perform Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Orchestra conducted by Eivind Gullberg Jensen on Saturday 14th February 2009 at a special Valentine’s Day concert.

The evening will also feature the Orchestra performing Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde and Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’.

Last November saw the 32-year-old Oxford-based aerodynamicist winning the final of the acclaimed ‘Pianists’ Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, presented by Yamaha and Classic FM at Cadogan Hall.

Dominic wowed a heavyweight panel of classical judges comprising international artists Noriko Ogawa, Piers Lane, Martin Roscoe and Barry Wordsworth with his dynamic and expressive performances of music by Debussy and Chopin. He was also voted winner of the prestigious ‘Audience Favourite’ award, by the sold-out capacity audience at the event.

Dominic Piers Smith is a remarkable young man who, when he isn’t playing the piano, can be found working as team leader for the aerodynamic design group at the Honda Formula One racing team in Brackley, Northants. Music took a back seat while he studied aeronautics at Imperial College, later collaborating with the Ferrari Formula One team and then progressing to aerodynamicist for the American Indy Racing League cars. His first design won the prestigious Indianapolis 500 at the hands of Juan Pablo Montoya. He has now been with Honda for 7 years.

Having taken up the piano at the age of 6, Dominic won a scholarship two years later to study at Trinity College of Music in London where he continued until A-levels. During this time he performed regularly as a soloist and accompanist and won many awards for performance, including the Billy Mayerl Jazz Bursary. The culmination of his musical activities during his studies at Trinity was his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto at the Royal Academy of Music. Dominic also performed at Southwark Cathedral, Wigmore Hall, the Edinburgh Festival and St John’s Smith Square during his years at Trinity College.

Unique to the UK, the Yamaha ‘Pianists’ Competition is now established as the most significant biennial event of the musical calendar for outstanding amateurs. The scheme provides a high profile, professionally produced showcase for the country’s most passionate adult amateur classical and jazz piano players and assists them in reaching new levels whilst promoting piano repertoire and piano playing to new audiences. The concert also raises funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Dominic Piers Smith told us, “The opportunity to play a concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra is, quite literally, a dream come true – and a long way from the living room for someone like myself! Winning ‘The Pianists’ competition has made this possible and exceeded all my expectations. I was extremely honoured just to find myself playing the music of two masters of the keyboard – Debussy and Chopin – in the final in front of a capacity audience at such a prestigious venue as Cadogan Hall – and on a world class Yamaha concert grand piano! Now I’m looking forward to performing at the Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra – I can’t quite believe it!”

Yamaha’s Senior Director, Mike Ketley comments, “For exceptionally talented amateur pianists like Dominic, the chance to perform with the London Philharmonic Orchestra would otherwise be impossible. There are many competitions for young, up-coming pianists, but ‘The Pianists’ scheme is unique in that it offers a real performance platform for talented adults who play for the sheer love of it. Yamaha strongly believe these people deserve a wider audience and the opportunity to fulfill their dreams by playing at a prestigious concert venue in London.”

The concert will commence at 7.30pm and ticket prices start at £12.50. Further information is available from Southbank Centre’s Ticket Office on 0871 663 2500 or by visiting www.southbankcentre.co.uk.

Meet the next generation of electric stringed instruments!

sv150

Yamaha’s all-new SV150 Silent violin is quite a talking point—it’s a new concept that incorporates refined circuitry, and cutting-edge technology, comprising a control box that allows the player to completely take the reins of the instrument-in-hand.

If being able to practice late at night or even performing live using different effects sounds good, then a Silent violin like the SV150 is the perfect present. Never again will you have to search for a practice room, or have to stop ‘because it’s getting late’.

The SV150 is a first for Yamaha—it follows a recent demand for electric strings to allow a player to operate the controls from the palm of a hand, instead of referring to the back of the instrument itself. The new, separate control box also reduces the playing weight of the violin. This is because all the instrument’s electronics are contained in the control box, which functions as a digital tuner, metronome, and effects processor with 24 digital sounds (plus a “clean” channel, with no effects).

The unit also reads tunes from an included SD card reader that can play wav, mp3, and MIDI files which a player can play along with, and comes pre-loaded with some basic tunes. The player can also slow down (up to 50%) or speed up (up to 150%) the tunes being played along with, without altering the pitch—regardless of their file format.

One thing that will make the transition from acoustic to Silent violin easier is that you can attach your old shoulder rest. With the SV150, you can play with absolute ease, and you won’t have to part with your old home comfort!

With all these new features and a range of finishes (including black sparkle, autumn brown and wine red), the new model makes an ideal Christmas present, and one which won’t disturb the relatives when they’re having a snooze! You can use it for practice, but you won’t want to keep it to yourself for long; this instrument is too good to be kept quiet!

Check out Robert Anderson in action on the SV150! – https://www.yamaha.com/thehub/home.html?CNTID=5019325&CTID=5042026
