Pete Long clarinet
With a musical career that has spanned six decades, Quincy Jones has earned his reputation as a renaissance man of American music. Tonight the Big Band takes a trip through Quincy’s impressive back catalogue in the company of clarinettist Pete Long, whose dulcet tones feature so prominently in the Stereophonics’ version of Handbags and Gladrags (aka the theme from The Office). Jazz is not a genre – it is a spirit.” With these words, Chris Minh Doky captures the essence of a life on the world stage among the elite in jazz. Today, 20 years after his international break, the jazz bassist’s very best recordings are gathered on a new double album.
His virtuosity and unique sound, is first and foremost what brought Chris Minh Doky to the top of the selective jazz world. As a composer and producer he moves across genres and has developed his own distinct sound based on a strong jazz tradition. Jazz might not today be the typical style that tops the radio charts, yet Chris Minh Doky is in his native Denmark as well as internationally a platinum and gold selling recording artist and has received awards for Best Bassist, Best Concert and Band of the Year. There is no doubt that Chris Minh Doky’s mission, to make more people discover and feel the jazz spirit, has gotten of to more than a good start.

Building Work Now Underway As John Thomson Becomes Honorary Patron Of Band On The Wall
With the venue’s redevelopment firmly underway, Band On The Wall is delighted to announce that actor John Thomson has become an Honorary Patron of the venue in the lead-up to its reopening in Spring 2009.
John Thomson joins Band On The Wall to support its fundraising drive which is seeking financial support from businesses in the city and beyond. Money raised from the fundraising will help with additional resources for the venue and its programme including working with young people and communities across Manchester. Known for his acclaimed performances in TV hits such as The Fast Show and Cold Feet, John Thomson’s relationship with this historic venue goes back many years. As a young comedian John took to the venue’s stage as part of it’s regular comedy nights that became a central part of Band On The Wall’s programming in the early 90s. He also took part at the venue in percussion workshops led by Dave Hassell, leader of Apitos.
Building work began on the Band On The Wall site and the adjacent building in February. The project Architects are ShedKM, of Liverpool and the building contract was awarded to Naylor & Walkden Ltd, of Adlington, Chorley, Lancs, following competitive interviews. The company has a successful track record of building renovations and refurbishments of old builldings, including high quality heritage work.
The early work on site has involved erecting scaffolding, carrying out extensive roof works and repairs to the external stonework, brickwork and cast iron columns on the facades of Band on the Wall. Substantial work has also been carried out in the basements, underpinning some of the walls and extensive stripping out work has been completed throughout both buildings.
The building contract is due to be completed in January 2009 and this will be followed by the fitting out of the renovated buildings, including the installation of new equipment, such as sound and lighting systems. The development is on target for the venue to open to the public in Spring 2009.

ACTOR John Thomson showed he had a head for heights when he scaled scaffolding at Band on the Wall to launch their fundraising drive.
The Cold Feet and Fast Show star has been named honorary patron of the former iconic music hall, which closed three years ago for a £4m redevelopment to transform it into a cutting edge performance and training space.
As a budding comedian in the early 1990s, John played a key part in Band on the Wall’s regular comedy nights.
A keen jazz drummer, he also played on stage several times with his band Apitos.
In its heyday, the Swan Street venue – which dates back to the mid-19th century – was at the heart of Manchester’s live music scene, with shows from legendary bands including Joy Division, The Fall and the Buzzcocks.
It was also one of the first places in the UK to introduce audiences to world music and gained an international reputation for its programme of jazz, blues and reggae.
Pioneer
Over later years it was a pioneering centre for Manchester’s club culture.
Band on the Wall closed at the start of 2005, when the building became dilapidated.
Since then, Inner City Music has worked to raise funds towards its refurbishment – which includes disabled access, improvements to the existing main space, restoration of the original internal feature and a brand new sound system. So far, £3.8m has been raised from grants – but local business is now being asked to stump up more money.
The additional funding will be used to further improve the listed building, and to put in place a programme working with children and young people from across Manchester ready for when it opens next spring.
Kick-start
To kick off the fundraising campaign, John donned a hard hat and builders’ jacket to climb the scaffolding that still surrounds the building.
He said: “Band on the Wall is an icon of Manchester – it’s like a brand without being commercial.
“When I heard it was opening again I thought it would just be a bit of a refurb and a lick of paint.
“I had no idea it was going to have a complete overhaul to turn it not only into a music venue but also a space for performance art master-classes.”
Under the plans, a new recording studio and in-house video equipment is being fitted at the venue, to enable local musicians and visiting artists to make recordings for use as demos and for media broadcasts.
Freeholds have been bought for the existing Band on the Wall and the adjacent vacant building, thought to have been built by the original owners of Band on the Wall.
It will be named The Picturehouse and transformed into a multi-use space for music and the moving image, performances, an online music archive and an information hub.
Grant funding has come from Manchester City Council, Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund.
