dave20samuels202

The second of our Yamaha supported nights this month features the outstanding multi-award winning US Vibes player Dave Samuels. Probably best known for his work with the hugely successful band “Spyro Gyra”, with whom he worked for almost 10 years, Dave also includes the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, Frank Zappa, Stan Getz, Chet Baker and Pat Metheny on a star studded cv. As well as winning multiple awards with “Spyro Gyra” Dave has also won numerous personal awards for his playing and somewhat impressively includes one Grammy Award (2003) and two Grammy Nominations (2004/5) for his band “The Caribbean Jazz Project” which also features his exceptional Marimba playing. A fluent and creative player whose music encompasses influences from be-bop to World Music Dave’s powerful and exciting playing is an absolute “must see”. Also featured tonight will be the Gareth Williams trio (Mon 17th) which also includes the brilliant bass player Laurence Cottle (Bill Bruford) and the great drummer Ian Thomas (Natalie Cole).

“Brilliant…Samuels has an original voice on vibes—not an easy thing to accomplish—and he leaves his stamp on any project with which he’s involved.”

Yamaha welcomes contemporary jazz superstar

Yamaha welcomes contemporary jazz superstar, Michael Lington to its Saxophone Artist roster. A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Lington began performing in the U.S. with such vocalists as Little Richard, Gary “:U.S.” Bonds and Randy Crawford. His major breakthrough came with singer Bobby Caldwell, with whom he played from 1994-1998. Lington’s 2000 breakthrough release titled, Vivid, featured the #2 hit Twice in a Lifetime, and Sunset which reached #4. Lington’s upcoming projects include opening for Barry Manilow with contemporary jazz keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and collaborating on his new CD entitled “Heat” with powerhouse writers, musicians and producers from both the pop and contemporary jazz worlds. The record was released by Nu Groove records on September 2, 2008 and is already heating up the charts.

Lington began playing clarinet at seven and learned about the music industry from his grandfather Otto Lington, a Danish jazz pioneer and bandleader for Shirley Bassey, Josephine Baker and Fats Waller, among many others. His grandfather’s rich jazz legacy, classical training and a stint touring Europe inspired the young musician to move to the U.S.

Lington is lending his creativity, imagination and talent to the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which raises funds for children’s music programs and provides instruments to public schools throughout the U.S. He also participates in Create Now mentoring troubled teens in Los Angeles, and Acres of Love which provides for abandoned and AIDS-infected children in South Africa.

In addition to his charity work, Lington has launched his own cigar company in 2006 called Michael Lington Cigars.

Calling all Brass & Woodwind students

Introducing the New Flagship Custom Soprano Saxophone

The latest addition to the flagship Custom EX Saxophone range is the new YSS875EXHG, the first Yamaha soprano sax incorporating a high G key. Designed in collaboration with World class Saxophonists such as Jean-Yves Formeau and Nobuya Sugawa, the new saxophone features the same exceptional sound characteristics and playability of the non-high G model but with an extended range.

By incorporating an additional key to an existing model which is already well balanced and has perfect intonation and tonal focus, you run the risk off affecting its playing characteristics due to the additional weight of the key and it’s mechanism. Therefore the new High G Custom EX soprano has been redesigned to reduce weight in certain areas including some changes to the body and key work, which has resulted in the saxophone having the same great playing feel and characteristics of the non-high G model. Many high G soprano saxophones suffer with a weaker lower register with some notes speaking very poorly but the new Yamaha EX Custom has excellent intonation and evenness throughout it’s entire range, from the very bottom of it’s register to the highest altissimo.

Specification:

  • Custom EX Soprano Saxophone
  • High F# and G keys
  • Front F mechanism
  • Supplied with both curved and straight Custom G2 necks
  • Tapered pivot screws with bullet head
  • Mother of Pearl key buttons
  • Includes a Custom 4C ebonite mouthpiece
  • Supplied in a deluxe ultra-lightweight case with a carrying strap
  • Available in gold lacquer, black lacquer, silver plated or gold plated finishes

Yamaha Silent Brass Systems – Silence has never sounded so good

Brass Playing Essentials

The Yamaha Silent Brass System gives you the flexibility you need to practice anywhere, at any time. This innovative system offers players the ability to practice in almost any environment without disturbing others and is the must have accessory for any brass player.

Perfect for students in halls of residence, touring musicians staying in hotel rooms, those living in flats or just those a bit timid about having others hear their not so perfect notes. The Silent Brass System, unlike other practice mutes, reproduces the real sound of the instrument through a pickup microphone built into the mute. The natural sound can then be heard by the player through earphones whilst others hear only a whisper. This prevents over blowing and allows you to play loud or soft, high or low, with your pitch remaining true and centred.

The personal studio can be used to add to your practice experience and can convert the sound to mimic the acoustics of a larger room. An Aux-In allows you the facility to practice orchestral or band music alongside a recording. The Personal Studio is easy to use and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and offers a choice of ‘clean’ or echo enhanced sound.

The most revolutionary, and appealing quality of the Silent Brass is the even and consistent intonation. When compared with conventional mutes, the Silent Brass mute performs closely with that of open playing. This close relationship ensures more productive practice which leads to greater results, quicker.

The Silent Brass System is a fantastic solution to brass players practicing needs. Ideal to use, even when the rest of your family are sleeping and perfect for the travelling musician, the Silent Brass system is an essential accessory for all brass players.
